According to “Zirconium: A Global Strategic Business Report,” recently published by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. (GIA), the “China Factor” has emerged as a key demand determinant shaping trends in several products, services and applications. Spurred by booming construction trends, the country’s production and consumption of ceramic ware is expected to outpace that of Europe, traditionally the largest producer.

Oversupply of titanium feedstocks has restricted the mining of zircon, and restricted supply and robust demand have led to a dramatic rise in global prices in the past few years. The gap between supply and demand is expected to even out in coming years due to supply of Indonesian concentrates to China and new mine supply. Zircon is widely used in ceramic, refractories and foundry applications.

The Asia Pacific region represents the world’s largest and the fastest growing market for zirconium, with consumption estimated at 532 thousand metric tons (MT) in 2007. Europe is the second largest market, followed by the U.S. in the third position. Asia and Europe together are estimated to account for 73.5% of the global zirconium consumption in 2008. Zirconium consumption in the U.S. is estimated at 188 thousand MT in 2008 and is projected to exceed 239 thousand MT by the end of the year 2012.

The report provides a comprehensive review of market trends and issues, drivers, a product profile, end-use applications, production scenarios, players, competitive landscape, technological developments, recent developments, mergers, acquisitions, alliances and other strategic industry activities. Analysis is presented for major geographic markets, such as the U.S., Japan, France, Germany, the UK, Italy and Asia-Pacific.

Consumption estimates are presented over the years 2001 through 2010, with long-term projections over the years 2011 through 2015. Historic analytics has been presented over the years 1991 through 2000. End-use segments independently analyzed include ceramics (tile, tableware and sanitaryware), refractories, foundries, TV glass and other applications.
