The North American high-performance ceramic coatings market is expected to reach $1.8 billion by 2012, according to Global Industry Analysts, Inc.’s (GIA) “High Performance Ceramic Coatings—A North American Market Report.”

Applications for ceramic coatings span such diversified sectors as automotive, medicine, defense, aerospace, fiber-optic communications and environmental protection. In addition, the ceramic coatings field is presently exploring the possibility of extending its scope and functionality to other varied applications. Increasing applications of advanced ceramics for a variety of uses is likely to drive the mature ceramics market and maintain its growth.

Thermal spray represents the largest segment in the high-performance ceramic coatings market, and the technology segment is expected to retain its dominance by 2015. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), the second-largest technology segment, is becoming outshined by the growing popularity of other coating technologies. The physical vapor deposition (PVD) segment is expected to flaunt the fastest growth over the 2006-2015 period.
