Murata Electronics North America: Low-Noise MLCC (posted 4/2/09)

Murata Electronics North America recently introduced the GJ8 series of multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs), which was designed to lower acoustic noise in consumer and industrial electronic applications by up to 30 decibels (dB) in the 1 uF model. The acoustic noise generated by 4.7 microfarad (µF) to 10 µF GJ8 series capacitors reportedly represents an improvement of at least 10 dB over competitors’ MLCCs.

The unwanted sound is caused by the expansion and contraction of the dielectric element, which triggers the printed circuit board (PCB) to vibrate at the amplitude of the voltage applied. When the frequency of the voltage applied approaches audio frequencies, a noise can be heard. However, with Murata’s technology, the GJ8 series of MLCCs dramatically reduces this sound.

In addition to its noise suppression capabilities, the new capacitor is available in low-profile models with thicknesses of just 1.25, 1.60 or 2.50 mm, depending on capacitance. The compact size helps engineers design the capacitors into increasingly thinner and lighter electronics.

“We have used our design qualifications and enhanced materials to develop an MLCC that meets size needs while removing the unwanted noise,” said Mark Waugh, senior product manager for Murata Electronics North America. “Our new GJ8 series is a perfect example of Murata’s unique and sophisticated capabilities and how they greatly benefit customers.”
