I recently ran across a press release from Indiana University regarding its Lifelong Learning Week, which will feature a workshop on pottery wheels, and I got to thinking: How many potters out there stumbled across an adult education workshop like this one and just fell in love with making pottery?

IU offers free adult education programs during Lifelong Learning Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 28, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Lifelong Learning Week, a celebration of adult education opportunities in Bloomington, will be observed Sept. 8-11. Sponsored by the Bloomington Lifelong Learning Coalition (BLLC) and the City of Bloomington Office of the Mayor, events will include a variety of free courses, workshops and lectures and will be open to the public. Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies is a participating member and its executive director, Ron White, is chairman of the BLLC.

IU Bloomington Continuing Studies will sponsor two sessions during Lifelong Learning Week, including Political Science Professor Marjorie Hershey's lecture, "Media Impact on the 2008 Election," and Continuing Studies Instructor Paul Dell's presentation, "Positive Thinking: New Paths to Success in Professional Development." Programs sponsored by other education partners will include lectures by Kurt Messick on royal scandals, Lois Sabo-Skelton on American fiddle music in Serbia and Bill Pursell on homesteading.

Workshops will cover a mini-GED prep test, tips for preparing children to read, using a pottery wheel, career exploration, social media marketing and research tools parents can use to help children with their homework. Additionally, there will be open houses for the Bloomington Adult Community Center and the job search collection and grants research center at the Monroe County Public Library.

BLLC was formed this year by the City of Bloomington Office of the Mayor. It seeks to support, promote and facilitate lifelong learning in Bloomington. Partners include the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation, The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, Department of Workforce Development, IU Bloomington Continuing Studies, MCCSC Adult Education, Bloomington Area Arts Council, Ivy Tech Center for Lifelong Learning and the Monroe County Public Library.
