DOE ACHIEVES ENERGY SAVINGS ASSESSMENTS GOAL U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Andy Karsner recently announced the completion of Energy Savings Assessments (ESAs) at 200 of the largest industrial facilities in the nation, identifying opportunities to save over 50 trillion Btus of natural gas (roughly equivalent to the natural gas used in 700,000 American homes). In 2007, the DOE will conduct 250 additional ESAs and offer cost-sharing options with industry, utilities and other partners. The 2007 ESAs will be selected through an online application process now underway. These assessments analyze pumps, fans and compressed air systems, in addition to process heating and
steam systems. Plants interested in applying for a 2007 assessment should visit the Save Energy Now website at http://www1.eere.energy.gov/industry/saveenergynow.

JENIKE & JOHANSON, CLARKSON UNIVERSITY RECEIVE NASA CONTRACT The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has specialized needs for the modeling of bulk solid systems, and discrete element modeling (DEM) is a common approach to provide a computer aided engineering (CAE) tool for designing and analyzing bulk material flow. Jenike & Johanson and Clarkson University will work together, using EDEM software from DEM Solutions, to develop methodologies to calibrate the software with physical tests and extend the range of problems that can be effectively analyzed with DEM. “Space exploration is heavily dependent upon granular materials, not only because we use bulk solids extensively in the technology to enable spaceflight, but because
many of the places where we go in space are literally covered with bulk solids in the form of soil and dust,” said Philip Metzger of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center. “Advancing our ability to predict their behavior is of paramount importance to the economics and success of the space program.” For more information, visit www.jenike.com, www.clarkson.edu or www.dem-solutions.com. Introduced in 2005, the SPECTRO iQ was specifically developed for demanding process control applications. It uses polarized excitation to perform multi-elemental analysis of solid, powder and liquid samples primarily for process control, where rapid analysis, reliable analytical results and simplified operation are especially important. The latest version of the SPECTRO iQ surpasses its predecessor by being easier to operate and incorporating a new detection system derived from the larger and more powerful SPECTRO XEPOS XRF instrument.

Investing in Ceramics In 2003, Superior Quartz Products, Inc. (SQP) faced a dilemma not uncommon in industry today: one of its long-time service providers was going out of business, and rather suddenly at that. Instead of casting around to find a new company that could take care of its quartz and ceramic machining needs, SQP took a different route. It acquired the service provider’s assets, brought all of its machining in-house, and launched a new division to serve the existing customer base. Almost sounds simple, doesn’t it? Not quite, but a new $4.8-million facility is making a big difference. Learn how the company has taken advantage of
A Superior Opportunity.
