CERADYNE ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-THREAT VEHICLE Ceradyne, Inc., through its Ceradyne Vehicle Armor Systems vehicle armor division and in conjunction with its teaming partner, Ideal Innovations, Inc., recently announced the introduction of a high-threat vehicle designated the BULL. According to Marc King, vice president of Armor Operations for Ceradyne, the vehicle is specifically designed for close urban terrain and can withstand the most lethal improvised explosive device (IED) threats. Intended to complement the overall mission capabilities of the mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) class of vehicles, the BULL’s armor provides needed protection against explosively formed penetrators (EFPs), which are the shaped charges
that hit vehicles from the side in close urban terrain, as well as the conventional IED attacks that have been used against coalition forces. Additional details are available at www.ceradyne.com.
ERIEZ EXPANSION HELPS SERVE HEAVY EQUIPMENT INDUSTRIES Eriez recently completed a 30,000-square-foot expansion of its plant in Erie, Pa., which serves as the company’s world headquarters. The additional high-ceiling space gives the company the ability to manufacture large magnets and systems in house, which is expected to translate into improved delivery and service for customers in the heavy equipment industries. According to Dan Norrgran, Eriez’ Heavy Industries market manager, customers in the mining, recycling, foundries, aggregates, utilities and abrasives industries typically utilize Eriez’ largest magnets and systems. The Erie plant, which opened in 1963, houses the company’s sales, marketing, engineering,
research and manufacturing operations, as well as corporate offices. The plant was 100,000 square feet before the expansion. For more information, call (888) 300-ERIEZ (3743), e-mail eriez@eriez.com or visit www.eriez.com.

UNION PROCESS EXPANDS FACILITY TO INCREASE SERVICES Union Process, Inc. has completed a 6000-square-foot expansion of its plant to accommodate the growth of its toll milling operation. “Over recent years, we have seen our growth in the service arena expanding at a rapid rate,” said Arno Szegvari, president. “Many of our customers are choosing to have us grind their material for them in our pilot plant rather than purchasing a machine right out of the gate. We have found that a good number of our customers ultimately purchase a mill from us once they see the desired result in our plant.” Toll milling involves a manufacturer grinding material for the customer in the manufacturer’s plant, which may be the
preference for a number of reasons. The customer may want to delay the cost of purchasing capital equipment, or they might simply not have the plant space to accommodate new equipment. Finally, the customer may have no interest in manufacturing and would prefer to rely on the milling expertise of Union Process to produce their material. Synthetic Diamond Abrasives As an abrasive family, synthetic diamond and cubic boron nitride are commonly referred to as superabrasives because their abrasive particles rarely wear more rapidly than the bond holding the abrasive in place. Diamond abrasives are recommended for processing ceramics, glass or carbides because of diamond’s unique hardness, heat transfer and thermal stability properties. In addition, synthetic diamond can be tailored through the manipulation of surface chemistry and particle size to meet a multitude of end users’ requirements. Learn all about
