ALFRED’S VARSHNEYA RECEIVES GLASS AWARD
Arun Varshneya, Ph.D., professor of glass science and engineering at the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University, was awarded the President’s Award during opening ceremonies of the XXI International Congress on Glass July 2 in Strasbourg, France. The award, which has been presented every three years since it was established in 1994, is to “recognize outstanding lifetime contributions to the international glass community.”

RECRYSTALLIZED SIC KILN FURNITURE AVAILABLE FROM BLASCH
Kiln operators can help hold the line against rising energy costs by switching to high-performance recrystallized silicon carbide (ReSiC) kiln furniture from Blasch Precision Ceramics. ReSiC offers a number of advantages over cordierite, a material commonly used in kiln furniture. For example, ReSiC can be operated up to 2900ºF, while cordierite can only go to roughly 2350ºF. At operating temperature, ReSiC has a modulus of rupture of 16,000-18,000 psi, while cordierite has a modulus of rupture of 1450-2900 psi.

C-THERM LAUNCHED FOLLOWING MATHIS ACQUISITION
Chuck Cartmill, founder of C-Vision Limited, recently announced the acquisition of the assets and intellectual property of Mathis Instruments Ltd. Mathis’ core product lines in thermal conductivity and in-line process instrumentation will be re-launched as C-Therm Technologies Ltd. The product will be manufactured by C-Vision Limited, an electronics manufacturing services provider based in Amherst, Nova Scotia.

U.S. ARMY TO PURSUE ADVANCED EVALUATION OF CERADYNE ARMOR
Ceradyne, Inc. was recently notified by the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM) that its alternate lightweight armor materials, submitted in response to the Army’s Long Term Armor Strategy (LTAS) requirements for advanced armor solutions for application on the tactical wheel vehicle fleet, have been accepted for formal evaluation by TACOM’s LTAS team. “This is a significant step forward for Ceradyne and the potential use of advanced lightweight ceramic composite materials,” said Marc King, vice president of Armor Operations.

LUCIFER FURNACES SUPPLIES TEMPERING OVEN FOR ACCU TRAK
Lucifer Furnaces, Inc. recently supplied a fifth tempering oven to Accu Trak Tool Corp., a leading manufacturer of precision knurling wheels and holders. Accu Trak uses Lucifer Furnaces’ forced air recirculating furnaces (Model 42-K24x, with a chamber size of 12 x 12 x 24 in.) to heat treat its tool parts. These ovens feature a stainless steel fan assembly to recirculate the air flow, providing uniform temperatures in the work area.

Resco Products, Inc. recently announced that it has acquired Shenango Advanced Ceramics, LLC from the interest holders of the partnership. “The acquisition of Shenango Advanced Ceramics will complement the current product offerings from Resco’s New Castle Refractories operations, which Resco acquired in December 2006,” said William K. Brown, Resco’s president and CEO.

Scott Dillner has been appointed director of marketing for the Flow Technology Segment of SPX Process Equipment. Since joining the Waukesha Cherry-Burrell organization in 1997, Dillner has held various marketing roles, expanding his responsibilities to include the Process Equipment portfolio in 2004. In addition, Pat Dowling will assume the role of EMEA sales director for the Flow Technology Segment of SPX.

UNION PROCESS PRODUCES LARGE CONTINUOUS ATTRITOR
Union Process, Inc. recently supplied a redesigned C-40 Continuous Attritor for a customer’s large-scale continuous production of zinc oxide and iron oxide. The unit features a 125 HP, T.E.F.C., inverter-duty motor with a variable frequency controller. The LED was programmed to display motor rpm, percent load, amperage and output voltage. With a gross tank volume of 49 gal and a media volume of 44 gal, the C-40 has an approximate throughput of 3000 to 3500 kg/hr.

WIENERBERGER TO TAKE OVER MAJORITY IN BAGGERIDGE BRICK
The managing board of Wienerberger recently announced that it now holds, has agreed to acquire or has received valid acceptances that represent more than 50% of Baggeridge Brick PLC. On June 6, Wienerberger agreed to purchase a 32% stake from the members of the Baggeridge board of directors, as well as the trustees of the P.A. Ward family trust, P.A. Ward and other shareholders. In addition, the company had also received approximately 8% of valid acceptances of its offer. On June 14, Wienerberger purchased 10.3% of the outstanding shares in Baggeridge from Trafalgar Asset Management Limited and RAB Capital PLC.
