CERADYNE ACQUIRES MINCO Ceradyne, Inc. announced today that it has acquired Minco, Inc., Midway, Tenn., for approximately $27.5 million in cash. Minco was founded in 1977 to manufacture and market fused silica powders for a wide range of industrial applications. Minco’s fusing process, which is the basis of its entire product line, is based on its proprietary technology. FULL STORY
DEGUSSA INCREASES CARBON BLACK PRODUCTION Degussa GmbH, a subsidiary of the RAG Group, has doubled its production plant capacity for carbon black in Paulinia, Brazil, to 100,000 tons per year. With this capacity expansion, Degussa is reportedly augmenting its position as the world’s second-largest manufacturer of carbon black (approximately 1.4 million tons per year). FULL STORY
HIPPLE ELECTED TO FERRO BOARD OF DIRECTORS Ferro Corp. recently announced that Richard J. Hipple has been elected to its board of directors, and he will serve on the board’s finance committee. The election increases the number of Ferro’s board members to 10. Hipple has served as chairman, president and chief executive officer of Brush Engineered Materials Inc. since 2006. FULL STORY

ICDD ANNOUNCES NEW SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES To encourage promising graduate students to pursue crystallography-oriented research, the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) has established the Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Fund. FRONK RETIRES FROM ORTON CERAMIC FOUNDATION The Edward Orton Jr. Ceramic Foundation recently announced the retirement of Dale Fronk, engineering manager. RIO TINTO MAKES RECOMMENDED ALL CASH OFFER FOR ALCAN Rio Tinto and Alcan have reached an agreement for Rio Tinto to make an offer to acquire all of Alcan’s outstanding common shares for $101 per common share in a recommended, all cash transaction.
