KLEINFELD NAMED ALCOA PRESIDENT AND COO Alcoa recently announced that Klaus Kleinfeld has been elected president and chief operating officer (COO) by the company’s board of directors. Kleinfeld served most recently as president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Siemens AG. At Alcoa, he will have full responsibility for all operating activities of the company. FULL STORY
DEGUSSA EXPANDS SHANGHAI R&D CENTER Degussa (China) Co., Ltd. recently announced that it has expanded its R&D Center in Shanghai, China, at a total investment of over €22 million (~ $30 million). As reportedly one of the largest R&D centers established by a multinational company in Shanghai, the new R&D Center has a total of 25,000 square meters of space, housing state-of-the-art laboratories for research and development, application technology, and technical service. FENTON ART GLASS PLANS FOR CLOSURE The Fenton Art Glass Co. recently announced that it will cease its operations over the next few months. “This decision was difficult,” said George W. Fenton, president. “Since the announcement in June regarding our efforts toward financial restructuring, we took many steps to try to continue the company’s operations. IMERYS ACQUIRES JUMBO MINING Imerys signed a definitive agreement on June 6 for the purchase of a 100% share interest in Jumbo Mining Ltd., which is located in Hyderabad, the capital of the Andrah Pradesh State in southeast India. Jumbo Mining produces potassium feldspar for the frit, glaze, tile body and tableware industries, and sells its products to the European, Middle Eastern and Asian markets. Irani has formed a new company called Infrared Technologies, Inc., which offers consulting services to industries where temperature is a critical factor in the manufacturing process, and where selection of the right instrument is crucial to achieving precise temperature measurements. MOHR TO HANDLE HOMEXX LIQUIDATION Homexx International, Corona, Calif., has announced the closure of its manufacturing operations and the discontinuation of its business. Homexx has contracted with Mohr Corp. for a liquidation sale through public auction of all of its plant and office machinery and equipment. The on-site auction sale is scheduled for September 11, 2007, when the assets will be sold lot-by-lot for the highest price bid until everything has been sold. FULL STORY

NEW SAFETY TRAINING DVD AVAILABLE FROM SGIA The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) recently released a new version of its Right-to-Know Training Program on DVD. The 30-minute DVD offers instruction on the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s (OSHA) mandated requirements. Training employees to understand and recognize hazardous substances and protect themselves appropriately is required by OSHA, as is training for the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
