AIR PRODUCTS TO EXPAND CAPACITY IN POLAND
A new liquefier to be built by Air Products will generate an additional 400 tonnes per day (TPD) of industrial gases to meet fast growing demand in Polish manufacturing sectors. The new liquefier will be located at the company’s Kedzierzyn facility in the south of Poland, taking the total capacity there for oxygen and nitrogen products to 800 TPD. FULL STORY
ALCOA PROVIDES UPDATE ON HURRICANE DEAN’S IMPACT Alcoa recently announced it has completed its damage and impact assessment at its Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC) alumina refinery and port that were affected by Hurricane Dean in August. As previously announced, the refinery operations were halted on August 18 in advance of the hurricane. The refinery remained curtailed until power could be restored, and production has begun. IMERYS TO ACQUIRE FELDSPAR CORP., ASTRON CHINA
Imerys has signed final agreements regarding its acquisition of The Feldspar Corp., a subsidiary of Zemex Corp., and all of the operating Chinese subsidiaries of Astron Limited. In 2007, The Feldspar Corp. achieved sales of over $30 million, mainly in ceramic applications. Astron China generated approximately Rmb 1.18 billion (~ $157 million) for its last financial year (ended June 30, 2007). FULL STORY

Burners for Thick-Wall Kilns
Thick-wall kiln designs present problems for conventional burners. The nozzles’ shorter design causes overheating to occur within the furnace wall, and the burners do not have sufficient exit velocities to allow hot gases to thoroughly penetrate the load.
