SNYDER TO DELIVER MCMAHON LECTURE AT ALFRED
Robert L. Snyder, Ph.D., who taught at Alfred University from 1970 to 1996, will deliver the annual John F. McMahon Lecture at 11:20 a.m. October 25 in Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall, on the Alfred University campus. Snyder, who is now professor and chair of the School of Materials and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has chosen “The New World of MSE: Nano and Bio Technology” as the topic for the McMahon Lecture. EVONIK AND TSM PLAN SOLAR SILICON PRODUCTION FACILITY
Evonik Industries and The Silicon Mine (TSM) are planning to build the first integrated production facility for solar silicon in the Netherlands. In this integrated production network, Evonik’s Chemicals division will manufacture Siridion® chlorosilanes, from which TSM will produce high-purity solar silicon for the photovoltaics industry. FERRO COMMISSIONS NEW PLANT IN SPAIN Ferro Corp. has commissioned its new tile color plant in Castellon, Spain, a year after breaking ground on its sprawling campus. The plant includes approximately 12,000 square meters (approximately 129,000 square feet) for production, quality control and supporting laboratory facilities. It includes state-of-the-art material handling and production technologies that increase manufacturing efficiency and optimize the quality and consistency of Ferro’s glaze and body stain product lines sold to the growing European tile market. PARLEC AND MAHR ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
Parlec, Inc., Fairport, N.Y., and Mahr GmbH, Göttingen, Germany, recently announced a bilateral partnership agreement to market and sell each other’s tool measurement and inspection products. SCHOTT SOLAR PLANS EXPANSION OF U.S. SOLAR BUSINESS SCHOTT Solar recently made a major commitment to the U.S. solar power market as it announced plans to build a new photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing facility that will increase its domestic PV production by more than 60 MW. SCHOTT Solar is currently evaluating locations for the new facility, which is scheduled to go online in 2009. In addition to producing solar PV modules, the new facility will be designed to produce receivers for concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. FULL STORY
