THUESTAD TO JOIN ALCOA AS PRESIDENT, GLOBAL PRIMARY PRODUCTS Alcoa recently announced that John Thuestad, president and chief executive officer of Elkem AS, will join Alcoa effective January 1, 2008, in the newly created position of president, Global Primary Products - United States. In this position, Thuestad will have accountability for Alcoa’s 10 aluminum smelters in the U.S. and the alumina refinery in Pt. Comfort, Texas.

ASAHI TO EXPAND CAPACITY FOR LARGE TFT-LCD GLASS SUBSTRATES Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. recently announced that it will increase production capacity of glass substrates for thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCD). Spending about 30 billion yen (~ $255 million), Asahi will establish a production furnace with a 5 million square meter per year capacity and a polishing line for the substrates at its Takasago Plant.

FERRO TO BREAK GROUND IN CHINA FOR SOLAR PASTE FACILITY Ferro Corp. will begin construction in the fourth quarter of 2007 on a 16,500-square-meter (177,604-square-foot) facility in Suzhou, China, for the production of aluminum pastes for the Southeast Asia solar cell manufacturing market. The new site is expected to begin production in the third quarter of 2008 and will include expansion capacity to accommodate expected growth.
