JUENGLING NAMED CERADYNE VP, PRESIDENT OF ESK CERAMICS
Ceradyne, Inc. has appointed its chief technology officer, Thomas Juengling, Ph.D., to the position of Ceradyne corporate vice president and president of Ceradyne’s German subsidiary, ESK Ceramics. He will have authority and responsibility for all aspects of ESK Ceramics, reporting directly to Joel Moskowitz, Ceradyne’s chief executive officer and chairman of the board.

COMSOL CONFERENCE CD PRESENTS MULTIPHYSICS SIMULATIONS
COMSOL, Inc. has announced the availability of the proceedings and user presentations from the Boston and Grenoble COMSOL Conferences. U.S. DEMAND FOR ABRASIVES TO REACH $5.3 BILLION IN 2011
According to "Abrasives," a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., demand for abrasives in the U.S. is forecast to increase 2.3% per year through 2011 to $5.3 billion, with raw material demand reaching $1.4 billion. Gains will be aided by the upturn in production of electrical and electronic products and motor vehicles, which are expected to recover from the declines of the 2001-2006 period.

MOHAWK ANNOUNCES FINANCIAL RESULTS; DAL-TILE SEES GROWTH
Mohawk Industries, Inc. recently announced 2007 fourth quarter net earnings of $379.1 million and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $5.53, including a one-time tax benefit. Net earnings and EPS for the quarter, excluding the tax benefit, were $107.5 million and $1.57, respectively. Sales were impacted favorably by the Columbia wood flooring acquisition, exchange rates and growth in the Dal-Tile segment, which partially offset other sales declines.

POCO GRAPHITE GRANTED NEW PATENTS
The U.S. and European Patent and Trademark Offices have approved the issuance of a patent for Poco Graphite, Inc.’s manufacturing, method and design of a dual gas delivery electrode. In leading-edge applications, two gases must be mixed and reacted in a controlled atmosphere at very high temperatures. The ability to keep separation between the two gases with components fabricated from non-reactive materials is a significant obstacle.

RIO TINTO TO INVEST IN FUTURE OF BOYNE SMELTERS
Rio Tinto (59.4%) and its joint venture partners (40.6%) will spend approximately $617 million on two projects that will modernize and extend the life of the Boyne Island aluminium smelters in Australia. The first project, construction of a new baking furnace, will reduce onsite greenhouse gas emissions, while the second project, which includes overhead crane replacement and a crane runway upgrade, will result in a more efficient crane/alumina transport system.

Setaram Inc. recently announced the acquisition of Hy-Energy LLC, Newark, Calif., a manufacturer of high-performance gas sorption scientific instruments for the field of clean renewable energy research. "This acquisition adds a full suite of analytical capabilities that complement Setaram Instruments’ existing thermal analysis and calorimetry product lines," said Gilles Widawski, president of Setaram Instrumentation, Caluire France, parent company of Setaram Inc.
