CERADYNE ACHIEVES RECORD '07 EARNINGS, REVISES '08 GUIDANCE Ceradyne, Inc. recently reported financial results for the fourth quarter and 12 months ended December 31, 2007. Sales for the fourth quarter increased 7.1%, or $12.7 million, to $191.4 million from $178.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. Sales for the 12 months reached a record $756.8 million, up from $662.9 million in the same period last year. FULL STORY
DESPITE RECORD SALES, FERRO REPORTS LOSS FOR 2007 Ferro Corp. recently announced that its sales for the year ended December 31, 2007, were a record $2.2 billion, up 8% from 2006. Sales for the fourth quarter were $570.7 million, an increase of 14.8% from the fourth quarter of 2006. Loss from continuing operations for 2007 was $94.3 million, or $2.22 per diluted share, compared with income from continuing operations of $21.1 million, or $0.47 per share, in 2006. In 2007, the operating loss included net pre-tax charges of $166.0 million. FULL STORY
FREEDONIA PROJECTS SLIGHT INCREASE IN REFRACTORIES DEMAND According to "Refractories," a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., U.S. demand for refractory products is forecast to advance 1.8% per annum to $2.5 billion in 2011, accelerating from the 2001-2006 period. Gains will be driven by strong growth in the production of nonmetallic mineral products, particularly cement, as nonresidential and nonbuilding construction expenditures are expected to accelerate. MURATA DEVELOPS LOW-COST DC-DC CONVERTER Murata Electronics North America has introduced its new MPD6S022S DC-DC converter. Developed with advanced circuit design techniques, the *022S offers quality performance at a low cost. This point-of-load (POL) non-isolated converter measures 21 x 9 x 21 mm in a SIL package, minimizing layout real estate. It also delivers 10.8 W with high efficiency (up to 95%) and zero de-rating. NSL ADDS EQUIPMENT TO INCREASE TEST CAPACITY NSL Analytical Services has expanded its testing capacity with the installation of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometer (ICP/MS) instruments. The Perkin Elmer Optima™ 5300DV ICP optical emission spectrometer (OES) is NSL's third ICP/OES instrument, while the Perkin Elmer Elan® DRC II ICP mass spectrometer is NSL's fifth ICP/MS instrument and the second with dynamic reaction cell (DRC) technology. SACMI SUPPLIES MACHINES FOR NEW SERAMIKANKA PLANT Production is under way at Seramikanka's new tile plant, which includes machinery and equipment supplied exclusively by the Sacmi Group. The plant, located near the town of Cifteler, just a few kilometers outside the Eskisehir ceramic district in Turkey, consists of two independent production lines with an output potential of over 8 million square meters a year.
