FocusOn: CerMA Manufacturing Conference

The Ceramic Manufacturers Association (CerMA) will host its annual manufacturing conference May 14-16, 2008, at the Westin hotel in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Speakers include Chad Leatherwood from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who will discuss using landfill gases to fuel kilns. In addition, a tour of the Edward Orton Jr. Ceramic Foundation is included with registration.

NEW CATALOG AVAILABLE FROM ALFA AESAR

A new "Precious Metal Compounds and Catalysts" catalog is now available from Alfa Aesar. The 80-page publication lists a full range of precious metal (platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, gold, silver and osmium) chemicals and catalysts. Included in the new catalog is a 14-page "Introduction to Catalysis and Catalysts," written by Martyn Twigg, chief scientist, Johnson Matthey.

DOE WILL INVEST UP TO $13.7 MILLION FOR SOLAR ENERGY PROJECTS
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it will invest up to $13.7 million over three years for 11 university-led projects that will focus on developing advanced solar photovoltaic (PV) technology manufacturing processes and products. Combined with a minimum university and industry cost share of 20%, up to $17.4 million will be invested in these projects.

METSO TO EXPAND FORMER BEST OPERATIONS IN NORTHEAST OHIO
Metso Minerals Industries, Inc. has announced plans for a major new expansion of its manufacturing operations in Northeast Ohio, near the company's existing state-of-the-art engineering and manufacturing facility in Brunswick (formerly BEST, Inc.). The company expects the new facility to be online in the spring of 2008.

RHI ANNOUNCES PRELIMINARY 2007 RESULTS
According to preliminary results, RHI AG increased revenue from continuing operations by more than 11% to €1,485.8 million (~ $2,342.3 million) and the operating result by approximately 23% to €164.3 million (~ $259.0 million) in 2007. According to RHI, with this increase in revenues it has surpassed the growth rates of its customer industries and the refractories market.

RIO TINTO REFINERY EXPANSION MAKING PROGRESS
According to Rio Tinto Alcan, it is firmly positioned to meet the growing global demand for alumina. The company's Yarwun, Australia, alumina refinery achieved record performance in November and December, and significant progress is being made on the refinery expansion project there.
