FocusOn: CerMA Manufacturing Conference

The Ceramic Manufacturers Association (CerMA) will host its annual Manufacturing Conference May 14-16, 2008, at the Westin Hotel in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Speakers include Chad Leatherwood from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who will discuss using landfill gases to fuel kilns. In addition, a tour of the Edward Orton Jr. Ceramic Foundation is included with registration.

NIMMO APPOINTED INT'L SALES AND MARKETING MANAGER FOR CALCARB

Calcarb Ltd. recently hired David Nimmo as its international sales and marketing manager. He will oversee the company's global sales and marketing efforts to vacuum furnace, aerospace, solar, semiconductor, photovoltaic, crystal growing, and other carbon-bonded carbon fiber (CBCF)-based rigid insulation and precursor material markets.

CERADYNE REPORTS FIRST QUARTER RESULTS
Ceradyne, Inc. recently reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2008. Sales for first-quarter 2008 increased slightly to $188.5 million from $188.4 million in the first quarter of 2007. Net income for the first quarter of 2008 decreased 13.6% to $32.9 million, or $1.20 per fully diluted share, compared to $38.1 million, or $1.38 per fully diluted share, in the first quarter of 2007.

DOE ISSUES CALL FOR NANOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a research call on Nanomanufacturing for Energy Efficiency research and development, intended for the DOE national laboratories with industry participation. The U.S. government's $8.3 billion investment in nanotechnology research over the past seven years has yielded impressive scientific discoveries. However, to realize the economic and social benefits of nanotechnology, these scientific discoveries must be translated into commercial processes and products.

MOHAWK ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER RESULTS; DAL-TILE SALES DOWN
Mohawk Industries, Inc. recently announced 2008 first quarter net earnings of $65 million and diluted earnings per share of $0.95 (both 28% below last year). Last year, a $9 million pre-tax refund ($6 million after tax) from U.S. Customs was received, and the company is anticipating additional refunds. Net sales for the quarter were $1738 million, a decrease of 6.7% from 2007.

NSG ANNOUNCES CHANGES IN SENIOR MANAGEMENT
The board of NSG Group recently announced several changes in the senior management of its board. Yozo Izuhara has been appointed chairman of the board, Katsuji Fujimoto was named chairman of the NSG Group and Tomoaki Abe has been appointed vice-chairman. In addition, Stuart Chambers was appointed president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the NSG Group, with responsibility for the profitable operation of all businesses within the Group.

WACKER SCHOTT SOLAR COMMISSIONS NEW SOLAR WAFER FACILITY
WACKER SCHOTT Solar GmbH, a joint venture of Wacker Chemie AG and SCHOTT Solar GmbH, has officially commissioned a new factory in Jena, Thuringia, Germany, for the production of silicon wafers for the solar industry. After six months of construction, WACKER SCHOTT Solar has commenced wafer production and plans to ramp up the factory's annual capacity to 50 MW by the fall of 2008.
