AWEA REPORTS ON 2008 WIND ENERGY GROWTH
The U.S. wind energy industry shattered all previous records in 2008 by installing 8358 megawatts (MW) of new generating capacity, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) recently reported, even as it warned of an uncertain outlook for 2009 due to the continuing financial crisis.

CORNING ANNOUNCES FOURTH QUARTER RESULTS, RESTRUCTURING
Corning Inc. recently announced results for the fourth quarter and full year 2008, along with planned restructuring actions. Sales for the quarter were $1.1 billion, down about 30% both sequentially and year over year. Earnings per share were $0.16. Excluding special items, earnings per share were $0.13, down about 70% both sequentially and year over year.

Kyocera Corp. recently announced its consolidated financial results for the nine months ended December 31, 2008. Sales and profits for the nine months decreased compared to the same period of the prior fiscal year due to a significant deterioration of the business environment, which brought a slowdown in demand and the yen's appreciation.

O-I REPORTS FOURTH QUARTER, 2008 EARNINGS
Owens-Illinois, Inc. (O-I) recently reported financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ending December 31, 2008. The company reported net sales of $1.705 billion for the fourth quarter of 2008, a $252 million decline from $1.957 billion in the fourth quarter of 2007. A stronger U.S. dollar in the fourth quarter of 2008 caused a $195 million reduction in the reported amount of foreign currency sales compared with the fourth quarter of 2007.

Panasonic Electronic Components Group, a business unit of Panasonic Industrial Co. (PIC), recently announced two additions to its line of ZigBee®-compatible wireless RF modules. Both the extended range PAN4561 and ultra-long range PAN4566 RF modules reportedly offer one of the best ranges for their respective classes, increasing the range of the device up to several thousand feet in optimal conditions.

PPG POSTS RECORD FOURTH QUARTER
PPG Industries recently reported record fourth quarter sales of $3.2 billion, surpassing the prior year's fourth quarter results by 3%. Fourth quarter net income was $71 million, or $.43 per share. Fourth quarter 2007 sales were $3.1 billion, and net income was $200 million, or $1.21 per share.

Sweco, a business unit of M-I LLC, recently announced the opening of a new North American test facility for its Ecutec business unit. Located in Florence, Ky., the 1000-square-foot laboratory will be used to conduct milling, classification, and coating trials on fine and ultrafine particles.
