ASAHI GLASS RELEASES 2008 FINANCIAL RESULTS
Sales in the flat glass business decreased from the previous year. In Western Europe, demand continued to weaken as the economy slowed down, and prices also dropped from a year earlier. Although demand remained strong in fast-growing markets such as Russia, it weakened in the fourth quarter, affected by the slowing economy.

COWON SELECTS CORNING'S GORILLA GLASS FOR MP3 PLAYER
Corning Inc. recently announced that COWON SYSTEMS, Inc. has selected Corning's Gorilla™ glass for use in the COWON S9 MP3 player. Corning's Gorilla glass is an environmentally friendly, thin-sheet glass, which, upon chem-strengthening, provides device manufacturers with a durable, scratch-resistant, liquid crystal display (LCD) display cover.

IMERYS REPORTS INCREASED SALES, REDUCED OPERATING INCOME
In 2008, Imerys' environment was marked by a gradual downturn in American and European economic conditions. This slump sharply worsened in the fall, resulting in an unprecedented drop in sales volumes in the last few months of the year. New housing-related markets (building materials, ceramics, performance minerals) were particularly affected in both the U.S. and Europe.

LIBBEY ANNOUNCES FOURTH QUARTER, FULL YEAR RESULTS
Libbey Inc. recently announced that sales for the fourth quarter of 2008 were $186.6 million, compared to $225.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. Libbey reported a net loss of $68.9 million, or $4.68 per share, for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2008, compared to a net loss of $5.0 million, or $0.34 per share, in the prior year quarter.

TITANIUM DIOXIDE CAPACITY COULD REACH 7.5 MILLION TPY BY 2015
According to "Titanium Dioxide: 2009 World Market Outlook and Forecast," a new report from Merchant Research & Consulting, titanium dioxide capacities totaled 5.6 million tons in 2008 with average operating rates of 95%. With a considerable number of projects planned to be implemented, world capacity will grow 30% by 2015.

PARAGON INTRODUCES NEW GLASS KILNS
Paragon Industries recently released its Professional Series glass kilns, which are painted black to distinguish them from the company's blue ceramic, jewelry, and pottery kilns, as well as its smaller glass kilns. The larger Professional Series have mercury displacement relays that turn on the heating elements. "The relays work hard in a glass kiln," said John S. Hohenshelt, company president.

SOLAR CELL MATERIALS AVAILABLE FROM PRED
Pred Materials recently announced that it offers a variety of materials for use in the manufacture of solar cells. Phosphoryl chloride (5N and 6N grades) is available for silicon-based cells, as well as high-purity gallium, indium, selenium and tellurium for CGIS cells.

RHI RECEIVES FLOAT GLASS FURNACE CONTRACT
RHI was recently awarded an order of approximately €12 million (~ $16 million), comprising refractory material supply for the construction of two new float glass furnaces. The customer is Ianua S.p.A., an Italian engineering firm that operates worldwide in the glass industry. RHI will supply almost the entire refractory requirement for these two projects, which will take place concurrently.

The results are in from last week's survey, and they are unanimous: 100% of respondents believed that the government has a right to cap executive salaries/bonuses and be involved in other spending decisions for companies receiving Federal stimulus money. One participant shared this comment: "I don't believe the government should be running business because they don't know how. But, the greedy amongst us must be regulated."
