FocusOn: Large Sapphire Optics for Mechanical Applications

Crystal Systems now offers 15" diameter sapphire plates in both optical and mechanical qualities. Sapphire has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, operating temperature above 2000° C and measures 9 on the Mohs scale. These characteristics combine to make sapphire the perfect choice for harsh environments where material failure is unacceptable. Applications include: semiconductor equipment components, wafer-carriers, wear-plates, and sputtering-targets. Our sapphire is offered in custom sizes and shapes, please call one of our Sales Engineers to learn how our world famous sapphire can fit into your needs.

The SSiC Slide
Extreme demands are placed on sliding bearing materials that are used in high-performance applications. Process fluid-lubricated bearings, such as those found in high-speed chemical pumps, must employ ceramic materials with a low-wear property profile for pumping corrosive or abrasive liquids. Sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) is a ceramic that helps solve a wide range of sliding bearing material demands. Read more about Optimizing a Sliding Surface in this article from our April issue.

Survey Says!
Last week, the CyberPoll asked about job furloughs. Of the total respondents, just 20% have not been affected, while the majority (56%) knew someone whose job had been furloughed. Others were directly affected; 4% had been furloughed themselves, while 16% had been furloughed and also knew others who had been. Our second question wondered which area of manufacturing would recover first. Consumer goods/retail and roads/highways/infrastructure were tied with first place at 40% each. Building/construction and general assembly/manufacturing each earned 8% of votes, while automotive came in last with 4%. This week's CyberPoll takes a look at renewable energy use. (The poll is located in the green box to the left.) We value your input. Please be sure to participate!
