It All Depends
Controlling the temperature of a process begins with accurately measuring the temperature in real time. Drift, error and every other term used to describe changes in a thermocouple's output are simply a result of either physical or chemical inhomogeneity. Changes as a result of shorting, cold end error or shunting result in error, but they are not due to changes in the voltage produced as a result of temperature. The term inhomogeneity as related to thermocouples has the effect of opening Pandora's Box; the ramifications of thermocouple inhomogeneity can be far-reaching and catastrophic. In fact, once inhomogeneity is understood, it is very difficult not to think about it when using thermocouples. Learn more about Thermocouple Inhomogeneity in our April issue cover story.

Survey Says!
Last week's CyberPoll asked about your companies' growth initiatives. Of the total respondents, 26.7% said that their company is spending 0% of its revenue on growth initiatives; 40.0% answered less than 10%; 26.7% said 11-19%; and 6.7% said 20% or higher. Those levels are expected to remain the same in 2009 for the majority of respondents (66.7%). An increase is expected by 26.7%, while 6.7% expect their company's spending for growth initiatives to decrease this year. This week's CyberPoll takes a look at job losses and economic recovery.
