FocusOn: Thermal Analysis Short Course, October 29, 2009

A short course on Thermal Analysis and Thermophysical Properties Measurement of Ceramic and Refractory Materials will be held October 29, 2009, during the MS&T Conference at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh by experts from NETZSCH Instruments in cooperation with the American Ceramic Society (ACerS). Course registration is $375 for ACerS members and $465 for non-members.

NETZSCH Instruments N.A. LLC is sponsoring the course. Emphasizing the characterization of ceramic and refractory materials, lectures will cover analysis techniques like the laser flash method for measurement of thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion by dilatometry, specific heat by DSC, and the coupling of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with MS/FTIR for evolved gas analysis.

Cover Story

Electronic design engineers are always overcoming challenges, including choosing the correct capacitance values of LCR components. However, the change in capacitance with applied DC voltage (a phenomenon also known as DC bias) further complicates the task of choosing the right capacitance. Luckily, advances in materials technology have led to a mitigation of decreased capacitance in barium titanate-based MLCCs. Learn more in our October cover story, Understanding DC Bias Characteristics in High-Capacitance MLCCs.
