FocusOn: Hexoloy® Silicon Carbide

Hexoloy silicon carbide (SiC) is an ideal material for a variety of high-temperature furnace applications, including kiln support beams, kiln tiles, thermocouple protection tubes and other components. Pressureless sintering of submicron SiC powder results in a self-bonded, fine-grained (less than 10 µm) product that is 98% dense. Outstanding properties, including strength, oxidation resistance and low creep, make it ideally suited for high-temperature applications. Hexoloy SiC exhibits 2-3 times the strength of nitride-bonded and recrystallized SiC refractory materials and retains its strength at temperatures up to 1750°C. With properties such as high thermal conductivity and thermal shock resistance, Hexoloy SiC is an excellent alternative to super alloys and other ceramics.

For more information, contact Saint-Gobain Ceramics at (716) 278-6233, fax (716) 278-2373, e-mail scd.sales@saint-gobain.com or visit www.hexoloy.com.

Guest Blog: Tile Tech Notes

I remember when I was six years old and my grandfather asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I looked him in the eyes and with a seriousness that belied my young age, I told him, "I want to be a tile engineer, Grandpa!" OK, so that never happened. I'm pretty sure no one has ever said that to their grandfather. Still, the world needs tile engineers just like it needs astronauts and IT people and mimes (maybe even a little more than it needs mimes). In 1989, I was a freshly minted ceramic engineer from Alfred University with offers to work at a nuclear glass research center or a ceramic tile factory. Since tile seemed less likely to irradiate me, I chose option B and here I still am, 20 years later, working in the tile industry. Follow this link to read the full text of Dan Marvin's new guest blog.
