Workers Strike at Sisa-Cam Plants in Turkey
May 30, 2001
Some 6,000 workers went on strike at Turkey's largest glassmaker recently after talks broke down on a wide range of issues, their union said. Economic crisis has sparked soaring inflation in Turkey and is expected to produce a recession of at least 3% in 2001. The statement from the Kristal-Is labour union said the action was taking place at five glass companies under holding company Sise-Cam -- Trakya Cam, Pasabahce Cam, Anadolu Cam, Cayirova Cam and Cam Elyaf. It said disagreements with management included pay issues as well as employment of non-unionized workers, which it said made up 25-30% of the Sise-Cam workforce. A statement from the union of glass employers accused the union of stubbornness and unreasonable demands.
