Penn State's Materials Characterization Laboratory and Materials Research Laboratory have merged with its Materials Research Institute (MRI) to establish a single organization to coordinate interdisciplinary materials research at Penn State. In its expanded role, the MRI will promote and support interdisciplinary education and research in materials throughout the university and will provide government and industry with a focal point for Penn State's materials research activities. The university has allocated new permanent funds to the MRI for maintaining materials characterization and processing facilities, seeding new initiatives, co-funding faculty and providing graduate fellowships.
