Altair Nanotechnologies' Fuel Cell Powers Electric Motors
August 19, 2002
Altair Nanotechnologies Inc. recently announced a successful series of its advanced solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) test demonstrations. The first series of tests were held March 28, 2002, and produced electricity. The second series of tests, held in June, were repeated several times and both voltage and current were produced. The Altair SOFC produced enough power to operate an electric motor driving a 6-in. impeller. The advantages of the company's nanomaterial-derived fuel cells include lower material cost, reduced fabrication cost and the possibility of using traditional hydrocarbon fuels in fuel cell power generators.
