AERES Approves Pechiney's Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program

AERES (Association des entreprises pour la r¿ction des gaz à effet de serre, Association of companies for the reduction of greenhouse gases) recently announced its approval of the French part of Pechiney's global greenhouse gas reduction program. The commitment pledged by Pechiney is to reduce its direct emissions by 23%, based on the reference year 1990 (3912 Kt/year of CO2 equivalent), from 2003-2004, and by 33% for the period 2005-2007. All Pechiney activities and subsidiaries in France are included in the program, which covers 98.5% of the group's total emissions in France. Low emitting sites are not included in the Pechiney emission inventories, which are certified by an independent third party. According to existing verifications, a reduction of 17% was achieved by 2000. The greenhouse gases included in the program are CO2, as well as PFC released in the aluminum production process through electrolysis, and SF6 used in connection with magnesium.

Pechiney's website is located at http://www.pechiney.com .
