Matec Applied Sciences has been granted a patent for a new device called the APS (acoustic particle sizer), which is capable of simultaneously measuring -- without the need for prior sample dilution -- particle size distribution (PSD), percent solids, acoustic attenuation and sound speed spectra, pH, temperature, and conductivity of numerous types of colloids. The APS will replace traditional light scattering-based instruments that require high sample pre-dilution, which can change the dispersion's PSD and introduce operator error. The APS will also be used as a process on-line and QC device thanks to its ability to characterize undiluted samples. The APS uses a patented particle size algorithm developed by Lucent Technologies.
