CERAM recently announced the appointment of Andrew Smith as research manager in its Building Technology Division. Smith is a geologist with a master's of science degree in industrial mineralogy, as well as a doctorate, which awarded for a study into alkali-silica reaction in concrete. He was previously the head of Hanson Brick's research and technical departments. Smith's role at CERAM will be primarily to build up raw material-based project work nationally and internationally, as well as to manage some aspects of cooperative research work for the heavy clay industries. He will also take the lead for CERAM in the recently awarded WRAP (Waste Recycling Action Programme) project investigating the use of glass cullet as a secondary raw material in the manufacture of heavy clay products.
