Net Shape Components Receives Phase 2 Option SBIR Contract
Net Shape Components, Inc. recently announced that the U.S. Navy has exercised the Option extension to the Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded Net Shape to scale up development of a low cost process for injection molding zirconia ferrules for fiber optic connectors. The original Phase 2 contract was awarded in July 2000 and was worth a total of $600,000 over 18 months. The Option component of the contract is for an additional $150,000 over a period of six months. During the Phase 2 project, Net Shape has demonstrated the ability to produce volumes of as molded and fired ferrule blanks to ID tolerances of ¿0.5 microns and average ID/OD concentricity of <5 microns. Such precision in the blank will greatly reduce the cost of ferrule manufacture by significantly reducing the amount of finish grinding required and increasing the yield of single mode ferrules produced.
