Tantalum metal is gaining in popularity with the semiconductor and fiber optics industries as a thin film coating with excellent electronic and reflectance properties. Usage of the material for sputtering targets is expected to grow from 90,000 pounds in 1999 to over 400,000 pounds by 2004.
“The increased demand for this critical material has impacted deliveries and costs so dramatically we had to find a new source of supply,” said Don Raifsnider, vice president of TMI. “We expect that this agreement will position TMI as a principal supplier of high purity tantalum, based on our competitive prices and short lead times, for the next several years.”
Additionally, the company has added Technical Engineering Associates as its manufacturing representative in strategic areas in the upper Midwestern U.S., responsible for Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. “We are very glad to have a company of Technical Engineering Associates’ caliber representing Target Materials and our products,” said Raifsnider. “Their years of experience in this industry will prove invaluable to us and to our customers.”
