The Office of Naval Research (ONR) recently awarded a new nanoceramics research and development program to Advanced Ceramics Manufacturing (ACM) to develop wear-resistant ceramic materials for use in industrial cutting tools. The 18-month program will study processing methods for creating new formulations using nanopowders to reinforce bulk ceramic material for the fabrication and field testing of ceramic cutting tools. ACM has teamed up with a group of strong partners to execute the program, including Villanova University, Kennametal Inc. and McGee Industries. Today's aerospace composites contain both polymers and strong fibers, such as carbon graphite. Cutting these aerospace composites is a challenge the ONR funded program will address with this new nanomaterials technology. Existing high-strength metallic alloy cutting will also be part of the program.

HALCO AND GOVERNMENT OF GUINEA ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT ON BAUXITE
Halco (Mining) Inc. and the Government of the Republic of Guinea have reached an agreement regarding bauxite rights in accordance with the Basic Agreement of Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG), enabling growth in the alumina refining industry in Guinea. Halco owns 51% of CBG, which mines bauxite in the Boke region of the Republic of Guinea. The Government is Halco's partner in CBG. Alcan Inc. (45%), Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (45%) and Dadco Investments Limited (10%) are the shareholders of Halco. CBG has exclusive rights through 2038 to bauxite reserves and resources in northwestern Guinea. Under the agreement, the Government, CBG and Global Alumina will execute a three-party agreement containing acceptable terms allowing the granting of mining rights in an agreed upon part of the initial territory to Global Alumina.

HUBER'S REX RECEIVES AWARD FROM ACMA
Huber Engineered Materials, part of J.M. Huber Corp., recently announced that Gary Rex, Ph.D., was recently recognized for his paper titled, "Rheological Study of Particle Packing in Unsaturated Polyester Resin Loaded with Alumina Trihydrate (ATH)." The award, part of the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) technical paper selection committee, was for Best Paper in the Area of Fire Resistant Technology.
