ArmorWorks Receives SBIR Grant for Fastening System (12/5/06)

ArmorWorks has received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the U.S. Army Tank and Automotive Command (TACOM) to develop a high-performance, lightweight fastening system to attach blast protection kits to vehicles. Currently, industrial bolts are used to attach blast protection appliqués to vehicles. Under severe blast conditions, these bolts can break off, causing secondary fragments that may cause additional damage and injury to the vehicle and crew. This award allows ArmorWorks to develop a system that will prevent injuries to U.S. troops.

“ArmorWorks’ approach is not to reinvent a new bolt, but to develop an innovative design concept, and evaluate and identify potential high-performance metallic or composite fasteners in which mine-blast appliqués could be attached to tactical combat vehicles,” said Ken-An Lou, Ph.D., chief scientist for ArmorWorks.
