Clemson's Richardson to Present Scholes Lecture at Alfred (posted 3/7/08)

Kathleen Richardson, Ph.D., will present the 2008 Samuel R. Scholes Award Lecture at Alfred University March 27, 2008.

Kathleen Richardson, Ph.D., an Alfred University (AU) alumna and professor and director at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Clemson University, will present the 2008 Samuel R. Scholes Award Lecture at AU March 27, 2008. The annual Samuel R. Scholes Award Lecture is presented each year by a distinguished glass scientist or engineer invited for his or her contributions to the field.

Richardson’s abstract for the lecture is “Design, Fabrication and Integration of High Index Contrast Chalcoaenide Glass Waveguides on a Silicon Platform.” She currently runs the Glass Processing and Characterization Laboratory within the Center for Optical Materials Science Engineering and Technology at Clemson. She is a past chairman of the Glass and Optical Materials Division of the American Ceramic Society and the president-elect of the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers. She also currently serves as a member of the board of trustees at AU.

Richardson received all of her academic degrees from the NYS College of Ceramics at AU. She holds a bachelor’s of science degree in ceramic engineering, a master’s of science degree in glass science, and a doctorate in ceramics.

After completing her Ph.D., Richardson joined the University of Central Florida’s College of Optics and Photonics for 12 years. She later spent several years at the University of Rochester’s (NY) Laboratory for Laser Energetics, where she conducted research on ion exchange-strengthened laser glass, passive and active liquid crystal-based optics, and sol gel-derived materials.

The award/lecture is named in honor of Samuel R. Scholes Sr, Ph.D., who founded the glass science programs at Alfred University in 1932. The lecture series was established in honor of Scholes’ interest in and philosophy of science.

Scholes served AU and the Alfred community for over 40 years. He helped to standardize the process of glass making in the U.S. and held patents for the development of an improved glass-melting pot; a method of stirring optical glass; and extraction of potash from feldspar. He authored three books, Glass Industry Handbook, Glass Tank Furnaces, and Opportunities in Ceramics. AU honored Scholes with an honorary doctor of science degree, and his name was chosen for the Scholes Library of Ceramics.
