“Thermbond creates a true paradigm shift in the way industry looks at refractories,” said Tom Atkins, vice president of Worldwide Sales for Stellar Materials. “Instead of the common view of refractory being the weak link in furnace and boiler operations, Thermbond can actually reduce downtime by eliminating the extremely slow startups required by conventional refractories, and in many cases by extending time between shutdowns.”
Rather than mixing with water like traditional refractories, Thermbond employs a phosphate-based liquid activator in combination with proprietary dry components to create an exothermic (heat-releasing) chemical reaction. This reaction causes Thermbond to set quickly. By using a liquid activator, Thermbond can be heated up much more rapidly than traditional refractories.
“Thermbond actually bonds on the microscopic level to inorganic substrates, and enables us to repair rather than replace existing refractory linings. With Thermbond, we can often save the majority of an existing lining by veneering a new hot-face right onto the old refractory. The refaced units are in like-new condition. Saving labor and material costs, our customers can be back in service faster than with conventional refractories,” said Jens Decker, technical director.
Stellar Materials also holds patents and has pending patents on Thermbond technology in the U.S., Russia, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico and elsewhere.
