Staxera GmbH, founded in 2005 as a joint venture of Webasto AG and H.C. Starck GmbH, has opened a new R&D and production center for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) in Dresden, Germany. The decision to move into the facility was made in March 2007 after important technical milestones in product development had been reached.
After eight months of construction, a production hall, labs and office space for 35 employees has been finished. An existing building was reconstructed and equipped with advanced safety, ventilation and gas supply equipment. The new facility offers Staxera adequate space for growth over the coming years.
The company is the first user of the new “Matpolis” development area, where city management plans to further concentrate companies closely related to the material science activities within the Winterbergstrasse campus of the Fraunhofer Research Center. The close proximity to Fraunhofer IKTS supports the continuous joint R&D program of Staxera and IKTS.
First-generation Staxera stacks are still running after about 8000 hours under full load, with a minimum power degradation of less than 0.4% per 1000 hours. A second generation showing 50% more power was presented in the autumn of 2007 at the San Antonio Fuel Cell Seminar.
