The board of directors of Unifrax I LLC has approved a $20 million expansion of its Tonawanda, N.Y., manufacturing facility. Work on the project will begin in early 2008, with anticipated completion by the end of 2009. As a result of the expansion, Unifrax anticipates adding 50 new jobs over the next two years to the existing workforce of approximately 180 at the facility. Currently, Unifrax employs almost 300 people at its three Western New York locations.
“Unifrax anticipates an increase in the demand for its products used in emissions control devices on vehicles,” said David E. Brooks, president and chief executive officer. “This expansion will provide the increased production capacity necessary to meet the growing demand of our emissions control customers around the world.”
The Tonawanda site and several international Unifrax locations were considered for the expansion project. An outstanding performance record, existing production expertise and a quality workforce all contributed to the decision to expand the Tonawanda facility. In addition, the support of several state and local agencies that offered a competitive incentive package helped to justify making this major investment in the Tonawanda operation. New York State and local economic development agencies (Empire State Development, Empire Zone, ECIDA) provided a package of grants and tax credits, and the New York Power Authority and National Grid provided a low-cost power allocation.
“Unifrax has been critical to the manufacturing base in Western New York since 1996,” said Empire State Development Chairman Daniel C. Gundersen. “We are pleased to build upon this relationship. The expansion at the Tonawanda facility confirms our belief that New York State is a great place to do business.”
