Acme Brick Names Spence Plant Manager of the Year (posted 5/27/08)

At its recent annual plant managers meeting, Acme Brick Co. announced winners of the company’s Plant Manager of the Year competition. John Spence, manager of Acme’s Oklahoma City Plant, received the Plant Manager of the Year award, while Steve Howard received the runner-up A-1 award.

Spence began his career with Acme in 1999 as a management trainee. He became the assistant plant manager at Acme’s Perla, Ark., plant and was later transferred to Acme’s Oklahoma City plant in the same capacity. Spence proved to possess a special skill in burning and product development, and has developed a good relationship with sales. In 2001, he was promoted to the position of Oklahoma City plant manager.

Previously recognized as an A-1 recipient in 2002, this is the first time Spence has received the Plant Manager of the Year award. His strong work ethic, good relationship with others and control of all phases of the operation has aided Spence in continuing the legacy of the Oklahoma City plant as one of Acme’s most efficient and profitable plants.

Steve Howard, winner of this year’s runner-up A-1 award, began his career with Acme Brick in 1998. Of his 10 years of service, eight have been at the Fort Smith Plant as plant manager. With over 30 years of total manufacturing management experience, Howard is a knowledgeable and respected manager within Acme Brick. This is the second year in a row that he has received the A-1 award. In addition to receiving the only 2007 A-1 award, Howard was also recognized for his diligence in environmental compliance when he received the 2007 Environmental Excellence Award.

Each winner was presented with a monetary award for his outstanding performance and leadership, and with a plaque expressing the company’s gratitude for their efforts. Ed Watson, vice president and general production manager, made the presentations.
