Morehouse Named Executive Director of Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit

John Morehouse has succeeded Margot Luftig as executive director of the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit (WSOAE), according to an announcement by Carl F. Lebowitz, the organization’s president. Luftig has served as the WSOAE’s executive director for 14 years and will continue in an advisory role.

Morehouse, a retired textile engineer, is a longtime member of the Salmagundi Club in New York and has served on its board of directors. He has also served the club for many years as chair of its Library Committee, organizing numerous special events, including library dinners, book signings, lectures and special art exhibitions in the library. He is a lifetime New Yorker and alumnus of NYU’s Washington Square College of Arts & Sciences.

Now in its 79th year, the WSOAE is reportedly the largest and longest-running outdoor art show of its kind anywhere in the country. The WSOAE, a non-profit organization, presents annual shows in the spring and fall. The Spring Show runs for three days on Memorial Day Weekend and two days on the following weekend (May 23-25 and 30-3l), while the Fall Show runs for three days on Labor Day weekend and two days on the following weekend (September 5-7 and 12-13). The exhibitions take place in Greenwich Village on University Place from East 12th Street running south along the side of Washington Square Park to Bobkin Lane.

The show’s exhibiting artists are juried and encompass all of the fine arts, sculpture, photography and fine crafts. In undertaking his new position with the WSOAE, Morehouse noted that the show began and flourished during the Great Depression and has maintained a tradition of quality and innovation ever since.
