Battelle Announces Expansion Plans (posted 1/19/09)

Battelle is investing more than $200 million in central Ohio to add, construct, and renovate manufacturing, office, child care, and laboratory facilities in Columbus, Dublin, and West Jefferson. As part of the investment, Battelle will create more than 200 new high-paying science and research jobs. Overall, the total economic output in the region stemming from Battelle’s investment is estimated to total more than $450 million.

“We are making these investments now to continue to advance science and accelerate our development of innovative products, services, and solutions in the areas of energy, national security, and the health and life sciences,” said Jeff Wadsworth, president and chief executive officer of Battelle. “We are pleased to share our growth with Ohio by investing in the region and creating jobs.”

At its King Avenue campus, Battelle is modernizing and renovating offices and laboratories, incorporating new energy-efficient features and other green technologies. Many of the projects are being built to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and await certification.

Battelle is also expanding and upgrading its biomedical research facilities to strengthen its safety and efficacy evaluation capabilities of many products for a wide range of clients in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, as well as in a range of food products. In West Jefferson, Battelle will construct a new state-of-the-art health and life sciences research laboratory slated for operation in 2011. This new facility will further expand Battelle’s capability and impact in biomedical research and development.

A noticeable part of the investment to support growing staff needs is the new 16,000-square-foot Battelle Discovery Center, a day care and early education center for children of employees. Battelle also has moved to West Columbus and invested in a new armor assembly facility that was opened last year. In Dublin, Battelle is planning to renew the lease and expand capabilities at its Blazer Parkway production facility to boost light manufacturing capacity and increase production of key electronic components used for energy efficiency, the medical community, and U.S. military forces.

The capital investments in central Ohio will retain thousands of research jobs and lead to the creation of about 200 new science and research jobs. In addition, the new construction, renovation, and modernization work is enabling many Ohio firms-from heating and cooling to architectural firms-to maintain and increase employment. Battelle estimates that its $200 million in capital investments will result in a total of $450 million during the course of construction. The resulting jobs will generate a total regional income of $75.5 million.

“This is great news for central Ohio,” said Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. “We look forward to continuing our work with Battelle as they expand and grow into the future. Critical to the success of the Ohio economy is our continued support of organizations like Battelle, which foster innovation and research as well as create the jobs that will lead us through the 21st Century. We also acknowledge Battelle’s commitment to education and other initiatives that strengthen local communities and enhance the quality of life for their residents.”

“Our ability to retain, advance, and attract world-class talent is a key driver in accelerating Ohio’s economy,” said Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher, who also serves as director of the Ohio Department of Development. “We are proud of our long-standing collaboration with Battelle and look forward to our continued partnership to support visionary research and develop and grow jobs of the future.”
