NSL Analytical Approved to Test Kids' Products (posted 12/9/08)

New CPSC requirements for children's products require that manufacturers and private labelers submit samples of certain products for testing.

NSL Analytical Services recently announced that it has been approved to test products marketed to children 12 years old and under by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). New CPSC requirements for the safe manufacture of children's products require that manufacturers and private labelers submit samples of certain children's products for testing by an independent laboratory before products can be imported, warehoused, or sold in the U.S.

To gain listing as a CPSC-approved lab, the CPSC requires that the laboratory be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, that this accreditation comes from an ILAC-MRA signatory accrediting body, and that the scope of the accreditation expressly includes testing to the regulations of 16 CFR 1303. As a result of this accreditation, NSL is now listed on the CPSC website as an accredited third-party test lab able “to assess conformity with children's product safety rules.”

NSL’s accreditation follows an audit by ACLASS Accreditation Services, the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board that provides laboratory accreditation for testing and calibration laboratories. NSL's accreditation covers testing for lead by XRF, ICP-MS and ICP-OES in accordance with 16 CFR part 1303, CPSA HR 4040, ASTM F 963-07, and EN 71-3:1995, as well as various NSL internal procedures.

“Third-party testing is a crucial step in assuring parents that the products their children use are safe,” said Larry Somrack, NSL’s president. “ACLASS accreditation demonstrates that NSL can be trusted to do this important work.”
