Christie Lane Industries has launched a month-long pilot program to provide glass to a Cleveland recycler. Throughout the month of July, Norwalk, Ohio-area businesses such as restaurants and bars will benefit from the program as Christie Lane Industries, a not-for-profit company that provides training and work for about 120 individuals with developmental disabilities, will be picking up glass for free.
John Schwartz, director of Adult Programs and Facilities at Huron County MRDD, said Christie Lane currently recycles glass, but it is used internally to create decorative tile that Christie Lane Industries sells under the CliTile brand. Under the pilot program, Schwartz said the program would expand to create an operation that would not only supply glass that is badly needed for recycling, but would provide three full-time positions at Christie Lane Industries.
During the pilot program, Christie Lane Industries employees are collecting glass from local businesses. A portion of the glass will be used as feedstock for the CliTile operation. The rest will be separated by color, crushed and sold to Strategic Materials in Cleveland, which provides recycled glass to Owens Corning, which is headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, for use in building insulation products that help energy efficiency. Owens Corning is one of the largest users of recycled glass in the world and works regionally to locate sources of glass, saving landfill space.
“Right now, there is a shortage of recycled glass on the market,” Schwartz said. “We’re going to try this for a month to see if it’s profitable. If so, we will include glass in our current recycling program and charge a nominal fee to businesses for pickup.”
Currently, Christie Lane Industries collects cardboard, newspaper, office paper, steel and aluminum cans, and plastic bottles for recycling at a cost of $10 per pick-up. “Essentially, we will see how much recycled glass we can collect and send to Cleveland,” Schwartz said. “If the numbers work and we can at least make it a break-even proposition, we’ll get after it.”
