Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit to be Held Labor Day Weekend

The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit will be held September 5-7, as well as September 12-13, in New York, N.Y. Now in its 79th year, the Exhibit actively recruits innovative young artists to its ranks of exhibitors. As a result, explosive colors, unexpected mediums and astonishing new concepts await the art lovers who will be strolling the tree-lined blocks encompassed by the show. Also on view will be art created by established artists and long-time Washington Square exhibitors who gather acclaim and places in prestigious museums, celebrated collections and prominent galleries.

This is a juried show. All applicants must submit images of their recent work. The images are reviewed by esteemed artists, and only those who pass rigid standards of excellence are permitted to participate. As a result, casual passersby and the most ardent followers of fine art can all be assured of an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

“This is an art history course distilled in the form of a single afternoon's walk,” said John R. Morehouse, executive director. “The whole trajectory of art from the mid-20th century onward can be viewed by the discerning art devotee. And, because each artist is required to be present alongside the artist’s works, the viewer can engage in a rewarding conversation with the artist that will enhance appreciation of the artist’s work and provide an understanding of the artist’s place in the art world.”

The event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. (rain or shine) on Labor Day Weekend, September 5-7, as well as the following weekend, September 12-13.

In the show will be oils, pastels, watercolors, mixed media, graphics, photography, sculpture, and one-of-a-kind crafts, including fabrics, jewelry, glass, wood and ceramics. Works will be on view on University Place from l0th St. south to 3rd St. All pieces shown will be available for sale, and admission is free.

A map showing the location of all exhibits will be available for free at the Information Booth at University Place and 8th St. To obtain a copy of the map prior to the show, or for further information, call (212) 982-6255 or visit www.wsoae.org.
