Owens Corning recently announced the appointment of Daniel T. Smith to the position of senior vice president, human resources. He will begin his new position with Owens Corning on September 14.

“I am pleased to have Dan join our team,” said Mike Thaman, chairman and CEO. “He is a strong business leader with a track record of human resource leadership. Dan is passionate about business success and the development of talent. His approach to business and his credentials are clearly aligned with our focus on growth and Owens Corning values.”

Smith has held leadership positions in human resources for more than 20 years. He joins Owens Corning from Borders Group, Inc., a worldwide retailer of books and media. He most recently served as executive vice president and chief administrative officer, where he successfully led global human resource functions and was instrumental in developing talent. Smith began his career with Borders Group in 1995 as director of compensation and benefits. Prior to joining Borders Group, he spent nearly nine years at The May Department Stores Co., where he was responsible for human resources and operations.

Smith received his bachelor’s of arts degree in economics from the University of Michigan and his master’s of arts degree in human resource management from Washington University. He served as chairman of both the HR Forum and Merrill Lynch client advisory boards.
