Inside CI: Turbulent Times

I was at a conference earlier this year, where the keynote was given by an economist who detailed his predictions for the worldwide economy. Interestingly, he did not think that the outcome of the U.S. presidential election would have a significant impact. His belief was that megatrends such as demographics (i.e., population growth), natural resources and taxation would affect the worldwide economy more than government leaders.

A lot of the economist’s other points made sense to me, but the concept that the winner of a presidential election is in any way inconsequential seems patently absurd, particularly now that the 2012 election campaign is in full swing. While politics involves a huge amount of gamesmanship, the actions that the winner takes (or even attempts, at times) bring real-life repercussions for millions of people.

Despite the ongoing economic instability and political turmoil that surrounds us, it’s vital that manufacturers do all that they can to thrive. From cost-saving measures and updated processes to research and product development efforts, our sector must keep moving forward. As Calvin Coolidge said, “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
