PPG’s Li Named ACerS Fellow

PPG Industries recently announced that Hong Li, Ph.D., staff scientist for the company’s fiber glass business, was inducted as a fellow of the American Ceramic Society Hong Li of PPG named Fellow of American Ceramic Society- (ACerS) during the 114th annual Material Science and Technology Conference and Expo, which took place October 7-11 in Pittsburgh.

“Dr. Li’s contributions to glass science and technology are widely recognized,” said Paul Westbrook, PPG science and technology director for fiber glass. “His research on the network structure of aluminosilicate glass was instrumental in the development and commercialization of INNOFIBER(R) high-modulus fiber glass from PPG.”

Li holds 20 patents. Prior to joining PPG in 2000, his research in nepheline discrimination at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory led to the current standard composition formulation benchmark used for vitrification of high-level radioactive nuclear waste at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site and Hanford Site. The benchmark is known commonly in the field of nuclear waste management and environmental restoration as the “Li Criterion.”

Li serves as a technical referee for numerous peer-reviewed journals, and he is a member of the editorial board of New Journal of Glass and Ceramics. He has served as chair of the Glass and Optical Materials Division of ACerS and has served on many glass science and technology award committees since 2006. Li is currently a council member of the International Commission on Glass.
