The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) recently announced that the Toledo Glass & Ceramic Award will be given to Larry Hench, Ph.D., on April 18 at The Toledo Club by the Michigan/NW Ohio Section of ACerS. Hench is a graduate of The Ohio State University (OSU). His summer work at O-I in Toledo reportedly started his career in glass and provided the basis of his later glass-ceramic research. Hench conducted research and taught at the University of Florida for 32 years; he retired from the university as Emeritus Professor to accept the Chair of Ceramic Materials position at the Imperial College London, University of London, where he co-founded and co-directed the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Centre (TERM) for 10 years. He retired from Imperial College in 2005 and was honored with the title of Emeritus Professor of Ceramic Materials.

He is receiving the award in recognition of his outstanding service and leadership in promoting glass as a remarkable material. He is an eminent scholar in the field of glass science and is reportedly known internationally for his seminal work on glass-ceramics. He has made significant contributions to glass-ceramic technology and education.Bioglass, the result of his work, was the first man-made material to bond to living tissue and is the foundation for the second generation of biomaterials, bioactive glasses and ceramics, now used world-wide for the repair of bones and teeth and even the active ingredient in new best-selling toothpaste.
