My daughter recently introduced me to the wonders of Internet radio and it’s official—I’m hooked. At the risk of dating myself, let me just say the ’80s channel is getting a lot of play in my office. I’m amazed that I know the lyrics of so many of these songs, most of which I’d forgotten even existed. But I digress.
What I really find surprising is how the bones of some of these songs can be heard in today’s music. Whether actual portions are sampled and reused or the lyrics/melodies are reminiscent of the older songs, today’s musicians owe much of their success to those who came before. I suppose it’s true that everything old is new again.
Silicon nitride’s history dates back more than a century, yet this versatile advanced ceramic material’s beneficial temperature and strength characteristics make it the perfect choice for many of today’s high-tech applications. K.J. DeCarlo details Silicon Nitride Synthesis in this issue. Be sure to also visit www.ceramicindustry.com/pods to listen to my podcast with the author.
Like silicon nitride, many advanced ceramic and glass materials/applications have experienced long development curves only to thrive in later years. “It may take decades for basic science to be translated into applied research,” writes Pierre Charreyron in this issue. “For example, over 60 years separated the discovery of the piezoelectric effect by the Curie brothers and the development of barium titanate piezoceramics by Murata in the 1940s.” Learn more in Advanced Ceramics Market Development.
