Corning Macor® machinable glass ceramic is a recognized technological innovation, as well as a technical solution for a wide range of industrial applications. Macor® gives the performance of a technical ceramic with the versatility of a high-performance polymer while providing the machinability of a soft metal. As a result, Macor® is an engineering material that can quickly be designed into complicated shapes using conventional metalworking tools.
Macor® offers a combination of properties unlike any other technical material. It is a white, clean, non-wetting, odorless and non-outgassing material that exhibits zero porosity. Corning supplies Macor® in slab and rod forms. High-precision finished parts are manufactured by Corning’s specialist partners.
Extremely machinable, Macor® offers tight tolerances capabilities, allowing complicated shape design (optimal performances up to ± 0.013 mm for dimensions, < 0.5 µm for surface finishes and up to 0.013 µm for polished surface).
Macor® remains continuously stable at 800°C, with a maximum peak at 1000°C under no load. Unlike ductile materials, it does not creep or deform. Its coefficient of thermal expansion readily matches most metals and sealing glasses. As an electric insulator, particularly at high temperatures, Macor® is also excellent at high voltages and a broad spectrum of frequencies.
As mentioned previously, Macor® is easily machinable. It holds tight tolerances and withstands high temperatures while maintaining a low thermal conductivity. It is also highly polish-able and can be soldered to a wide range of materials.
As a radiation-resistant, lead-free material, Macor® offers many application possibilities, including in constant and ultra-high vacuum environments, laser technology, semiconductors, and electronic equipment. Other industries that benefit include aerospace, medical, automobile, military and nuclear.
Macor®’s short product process uses ordinary machining tools to form complex design shapes. No post-firing is required. The process has a fast turnaround, is cost effective, and boasts a quick end-user delivery time.
