Linseis Instruments recently announced the release of the new DIL L 74 optical dilatometer. The instrument reportedly offers many advantages compared to traditional push-rod dilatometers.
Contact-free measurement is made possible through the use of a high-resolution CCD camera optical system; this means no push-rod is used to transfer the expansion to a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) sensor. For soft samples or samples that melt during the measurement, this leads to a result that is not distorted by contact pressure.
The optical system uses a high-resolution digital camera with highly precise optics to look at the dimensional changes of the sample, which is in a heating/cooling furnace. With this system, it is also possible to look at phase changes between solid and liquid. In addition, the user can look at contact angle measurement when the solid sample is turning into a liquid ball, which provides information about surface tension.
