Advanced Ceramics Consumption to See Strong Uptick

U.S. consumption of advanced ceramics and nanoceramic powders is estimated at 1.5 billion lbs, with a market value of nearly $3.4 billion, in 2011. Those amounts are projected to reach nearly 2 billion lbs and $5.4 billion, respectively, in 2016, after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.9%, according to “Advanced Ceramics and Nanoceramic Powders,” a new study from BCC Research.

U.S. consumption of advanced ceramics is expected to be 1.5 billion lbs, with a value of $2.8 billion in 2011, and in 2016 those numbers are projected to reach 2 billion lbs and $4.1 billion, yielding CAGRs of 8.3%. Nanoceramic powder values should surpass $600 million in 2011 and reach nearly $1.3 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 16.4% over the next five years.

Advanced ceramics are one of the most important types of advanced materials, an enabling technology critical to a range of applications, including structural, electronic, chemical processing, environmental, and thermal spray coatings. Advanced ceramic powders include oxides, carbides, nitrides and borides. One of the most recent developments in advanced ceramic powders is nanosized ceramic powders. Nanoceramic powders, which constitute an important segment of the nanostructured materials market, are used in applications such as microelectronics, optical, chemical, environmental, and magnetic recording.
